Rear View Mirror #4
In the last week I...
... returned from my Queensland holiday refreshed, warmed up, clear-minded, optimistic, reinvigorated, loose and ready to go ...
... into the City2Surf, in which I achieved a personal best time of 91 minutes, at a rate of 6:33 min/km, a nice consistent jogging pace. While I was aiming from under 90 minutes, it was still a great result. The greatest achievement for me was that I did not walk for the 14km, even up heartbreak hill. In the past, I've probably run at a faster pace, only to tire and walk for significant periods of time. This time, it felt great to just sustain at a consistent pace. The last 2 kms felt more sore and I got hungry, but overall I felt very good. Bring on the 10km Canberra Fun Run, where I guess my aim is under 60 minutes (I previously did a 10km Angkor Wat run at 63 minutes)
... I returned home to the compost bin being wet and full of fruit flies! It's time to get more brown material and do more upkeep. Happily, the pile is reducing down and appears to be moist enough, but I fear it will be a while before the Canberra temperatures rise enough for the pile to really smoke. In other good news, my mum has also started a compost pile, and has her own organic snow peas going as well!
... watched Parker, a typically enjoyable B-grade Jason Statham action film, with the obligatory gratutituous shots of the former Olympic diver. Best part of the movie - JLo's effortless sass. It's a shame she doesn't get to showcase it very often!
... kept getting distracted at work because of all the uncertainty in our Parliament, the ongoing postal 'survey', and the shock/despair/sorrow at the Charlottesville and Barcelona events. We'll just keep soldiering on, but one day we're going to have to face the world we live in
... to give myself some other distraction, I started reading Down the Hume, a 2017 gay-Greek-Western Sydney novel that used some of the language hooks of Loaded. It's tough going so far, but I'll be keen to see whether there is any emotional resonance or at least recognition of the Western Sydney that I grew up with.
